One of the most effective ways an ad can get our attention is through a jingle. Sometimes jingles are so compelling they become fixed in our memories. Long after a remarkable jingle has stopped airing, we still remember it and hum along to the catchy tune.

Over the years there have been so many iconic jingles which have succeeded in standing out, it made it hard to narrow our choices down to only three. We selected these three as our favorites because they were both infectious and long-lasting. They had an impact which extended over decades and remain memorable even today.

Plop Plop Fizz Fizz, Alka Seltzer

The “Plop Plop Fizz Fizz” jingle for Alka Seltzer was originally written in the 1950’s and was so popular that it was used in various incarnations until the 1980’s. Simple and striking, the song originally employed repetition of “plop plop fizz fizz” to emphasize the fact that customers should use two tablets instead of one to maximize the benefits of Alka Seltzer. This led to sales of the product going through the roof when the jingle was first introduced. The song was so prominent that Sammy Davis Jr. even did his own version.

My Bologna Has a First Name, Oscar Meyer

In 1973, a commercial aired featuring a small child with a fishing pole, singing a cheerful ditty about the Oscar Meyer bologna in his sandwich. The song took off, making this quaint little commercial one of the longest running in the country. At the time, Oscar Meyer was already famous for its long-running jingle “I Want to Be an Oscar Meyer Wiener”. The newer “My Bologna Has a First Name” song went on to eclipse the original jingle, cementing its place in advertising history.

Like a Good Neighbor, State Farm

Penned by famous American singer-songwriter Barry Manilow in 1971, the State Farm jingle remains one of the most famous. Short and sweet, it’s a memorable song anyone can sing. Plus, it perfectly summed up State Farm’s ethos for decades, effectively projecting their brand into the world. The jingle was so successful that few people are unaware that State Farm actually changed their slogan.
